Surviving and Thrivingafrika's april 2009 updateAfrika, our nervous, malnourished baby chimpanzee, has taken full advantage of her new digs on the Ngamba Island Chimp Sanctuary in Uganda. The rain forest habitat has proven to be a great fit for this young, active chimp.
In With the In-CrowdAfrika has matured into a confident young lady and has gained the acceptance of the other chimps on the island. Even the dominant male has taken to her infectious personality. Afrika has become very independent and has grown into her new role as a wild chimp. She no longer relies on the human caretakers, but instead turns to her peers when she needs help.
A Friend IndeedAfrika’s best friend Mac, however, has had a more difficult time adjusting to life with the other chimps. Because of his traumatic beginnings, Mac is still very nervous around others. Afrika is Mac’s greatest ally, comforting and protecting him when he needs it most. Mac is very lucky to have a friend like Afrika, and the rest of the chimps at Ngamba feel lucky to have her as well!
